For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.  John 3:16

Today’s Gospel includes the most famous verse in the bible.  Even just using the numbers, even non-believers know that you are referring to a scripture verse.  Pretty powerful stuff.  It is said that in these few words, the whole of Scripture is summed up.  Having these words about Jesus reason for coming to earth, a gift from His Father, to give eternal life to a very unworthy lot is miraculous news indeed.  This entire passage in John reveals so much about the truth of our giftedness.  I marvel every day that God could love selfish, forgetful, and totally unworthy people enough to sacrifice His only Son.  Being a parent and contemplating that incredible feat always gives me pause.  Every parent I know, would rather sacrifice themselves than see their child suffer even the smallest pain, much less death.

Do you ever ask yourself, why does God love me so much?  How is it possible that I will be able to live eternally with God in heaven because of Jesus total unselfish gift?  When I sit and look up at the crucifix in our church, I recall my sins that put Him there and am so humbled. I know that I could never endure the suffering that Jesus faced.  I am grateful that I don’t have to even think about it.  I am grateful that I don’t know any more than the present moment in my life.  Jesus knew what He would suffer and yet went through with it, choosing His Father’s will.  How the Holy Spirit must have poured strength into Jesus so that He could endure the betrayal, the pain and the loneliness of dying on the cross, lifted up in ignominy.

God, in Your THREE Persons, You each gave me the ultimate gift.  Today I pray that I can live my life always loving gratefully and in a perpetual state of grace to be ready to live eternally with You.   Help me to always appreciate all You gave so that I might be saved.
