Thursday February 8, 2018 Masters

No one can serve two masters.  Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other.  You cannot serve both God and money.  Luke 16:13

I don’t know about you, but this verse has confused me.  TWO masters, I feel like I have so many more than that.  My spouse, my kids, my grandkids, my volunteer work, my writing, my home and my job all demand a lot of mind share and my faith is a part of all.  If I am honest here, I don’t think I ever feel like I do enough to serve anyone of these and I don’t hate any of them, I just feel unable to keep up!  I am constantly wishing that I had more hours in the day.

How did Jesus mean for me to prioritize me life?  I really believe that He gives me a choice every moment to put Him first while I tend to business of loving and serving all the other masters in my life.  My utmost for HIS highest is what Oswald Chambers called it. Very few people in this world have the luxury of giving their FULL attention to God. Even the cloistered nuns and priests have to cook or clean to survive amidst their dedication and prayer.  Our lives in order to survive must have some practical aspects.  I might hate cleaning and cooking, but I need to do both to survive.

Luke’s words were meant to put things in a new perspective for the early followers of the Way and continue to be important today.  If I put wealth first, I will lose sight of the kingdom that God is calling me to inhabit.  STUFF of life will never satisfy my true longing for Him.  I serve many masters as all do in this very confusing world.  Making more decisions before breakfast than the early Christians had to make in a week.  But God must be all in all of them.  When that is my way, I will be truly putting Him first, serving my Master.

Lord help me to make YOU the Master of my life.  Give me the strength to choose rightly in every situation, recognizing that You are the WAY, the Truth and my Life, always.
