Monday February 5, 2018 Need

Since there will never cease to be some in need on the earth, I therefore command you, “Open your hand to the poor and needy neighbor in your lands.” Deuteronomy 15:11

When I read this passage this morning I was struck by the fact that it was written in one of the earliest books of the bible.  There will NEVER cease to be NEED is a kind of disheartening thought.  Mankind has a tendency to want to fix problem and this is one that will never go away.  I have a theory…. God wants to give us a way to be generous.  He supplied His children with a beautiful place to live, intelligence and imagination to keep “improving” and a finite number of days to be here lest we become too complacent.  Life as we know it cannot all be about “taking” or you create a very selfish and limited existence.

If I open my hand to others, I have learned that God is so generous to refill it.  If I look for ways to share who and what I am, He blesses me abundantly.  I have met so many people who have schooled me in what it means to be open to the poor.  Those who serve our neighbors who are homeless, those who minister to the folks living in their cars or in rent by the week hotels, model for me this passage.  I also know many who serve the poor in spirit; the many who are broken and sad, going through divorce, dealing with the loss of a spouse or a child.  Opening a hand to those who are grieving brings them a light in their darkest times.

There is tremendous pain in this world just as this verse promises.  By standing in the void, with open hand and open heart, God uses each of us to love on those who are needy.  The fact that the poor will always be with us, should not be a cause for despair but for rejoicing.  How else can I who am so blessed give back to the Lord?

Help me God, to always be aware and generous to those whom you have given me to love and serve in Your name.  Help me to see their need as an opportunity to open my hands and work alongside them to make their life better in Your name.
