Wednesday June 14, 2017 Slaves

Do you not know that if you present yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?  Romans 6:16

There is a real problem today with slavery.  Not the kind where people are captured and forced into service though that does exist as well.  No, the real issue is that people place themselves into slavery to violence, to pornography, to drugs, to addictions of every kind.  Relinquishing control is often subtle, like a diversion or a guilty pleasure that takes over more and more time and mind share.  Then one day, full blown slavery is a reality where all power is in the obsession.

Each of God’s children needs to make a decision for good.  Not just once but daily, hourly and even minute by minute.  The twelve-step program teaches people who are slaves to alcohol or drugs that choices can even be necessary, second by second. With the help of God and a sponsor, real change and eventually freedom, can be accomplished.

There is hope for each of us that we can overcome slavery when we become slaves to God instead of our earthly temptations.  Some may feel that is trading one ball and chain for another.  I read about a couple who wrote a letter for their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of life lessons they had learned in their 66 years of marriage.  One very important one speaks to this…

“If you find that Christianity exhausts you, draining you of energy, then you are practicing religion rather than enjoying a relationship with Jesus Christ.  Your walk with the Lord will not make you weary; it will invigorate you, restore your strength, and energize your life.”

I believe this and know it to be true.

Lord I always seek to be a slave to You!  Help me to be an obedient servant who lives in the unforced rhythm of grace and reflects the joy that being YOUR slave provides for me.  Walking beside You forever!
