Thursday April 20, 2017 Aroma

We are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.  2 Corinthians 2:15

Scientists have shared that our sense of smell is the keenest sense that we have among the five.  A whiff of Old Spice and I am brought back to my dad’s side.  Raisin Cake baking and I am back in my grandmother’s home at Christmas time.  These smells of happiness and comfort are a wonderful gift in a tense and battered world.

God asked His own to be a pleasing aroma that can ease the burdens of those who are struggling in the world.  I think that is why people send flowers to a funeral when they can’t be there themselves.  Surrounding those who mourn with sweet aroma is a way to lift the spirit in the darkest times.  St Paul’s description in this verse and those around it referenced the Roman tradition of honoring the victorious generals after a battle.  There would be a parade and the temples would all burn delicious smelling incense that created a beautiful scent to honor the victor during his walk among the cheering crowds.

Funny isn’t it, that Jesus walked the streets of Jerusalem among the crowds who jeered Him but no sweet smells were dispersed that day.  God asks me now to be that aroma that brings people to think of Him.  A pleasing scent that brings back memories of love and understanding.

Lord, help me to be your sweet aroma today for those who need to know that You are really present in their life.
