I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.  John 13:34

Jesus was a conundrum for the people who heard Him.  He was preaching a NEW way of living.  No more “An eye for an eye.”  No more law first, kindness and love second.  He did not throw stones at harlots and he hung around with sinners and tax collectors.  Everything He was and every He did were NEW and totally unexpected.  There were those who could accept this but many could not.  People resist change 2000 years ago just as they do today.

Having Jesus sitting at table knowing what people “THOUGHT” scared the Pharisees a bit, I am sure.  When they looked on disapproving of the waste of expensive nard being used on His feet and this sinner touching Him… He challenged His host!  Jesus knew human nature and created opportunities for its ugly underbelly to be revealed and chastised.  How beautifully He taught using parables and situations to shape a NEW WAY of living.

I love the insights that I gain each time I read scripture.  Jesus opens every heart that willingly comes to Him and pours in NEWNESS.  New ways to see the world.  New ways to accept others who are different from me.  New ways to forgive those who have hurt me.  The way to LOVE one another is to offer newness and openness… no prejudice or judgement.  Jesus showed me that in every encounter He made while traveling for three years among the foothills of Israel, that LOVE is the only way.

Jesus, thank You for coming to earth to show me the way to love.  Help me to be NEW and pure in my love of others and myself.
