Sunday January 8, 2017 Epiphany

“All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him”.  Matthew 11:27

Merriam Webster defines epiphany this way (1) : an unusually sudden manifestation or perception of the essential nature or meaning of something (2) : an intuitive grasp of reality through something (as an event) usually simple and striking (3) : an illuminating discovery, realization, or disclosure b : a revealing scene or moment.  Our church celebrates today when the Three Kings arrived and brought their gifts to the Baby Jesus.  I think the king’s epiphany began when they saw the star for the first time.  They planned whatever they would do about it, organized a journey across deserts, decided which gifts to bring and said good-bye to their lives for months, maybe even years.  God revealed something to them about the birth of His Son.  That revelation changed them forever.

Today, epiphanies still occur.  People have “light bulb” moments that move them to make incredible breakthroughs in art, science, medicine and technology.  Each Christian has their own Epiphany as well.  That moment when they KNOW there is a God and He loves and cares for them.  Some say it is when they are “Born Again.” Others, when they meet someone who they realize is Christ for them in a moment where they need a savior.  Some when they meet Christ in those that need to be served.  God is revealed and life is never the same.  Jesus promises that He is the WAY to His Father.  When I have a profound encounter that moves me in a totally new direction toward God, that is an epiphany!

The most important thing about the wise men is that they did something about it!  Millions of people saw the star.  Only these three men came together and took action that changed their lives forever.  They are immortalized in song and in Scripture because they made a choice to learn what this star’s rising meant to the whole world.  It is not easy to be a follower of Christ!  It was not easy to seek Him for these men and it is not for me!  Being a true follower is not for the weak of heart!  Today, Wise MEN still Seek HIM!

Lord, that You for the desire You have placed in my heart to seek You.  Help me never lose faith even when the road is long and I encounter evil men like Herod, who want to derail my journey.  Give me the wisdom of those three ancient travelers to see and follow where You lead!
