Wednesday September 28, 2016 Cost

“He said to me: ‘It is done, I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End.  To him who is thirsty I will give drink without cost from the water of life. ‘” Revelation 21:6

I was working at the Children’s Christmas Boutique the Sunday before Christmas.  There were hundreds of white elephant items that were donated from parishioners so that the children could shop for siblings, parents and friends.  The kids would ask what does this item or that one cost, and instead of responding with a price, I would ask how much do you have and who do you need to buy presents for.  After we picked out presents for each person on their list, amazingly they had just enough to spend.  I think God responds the same way.  Unlike the retail stores who are all about the profit margin.  God has opened His storehouse freely because Jesus has paid the price for each of us.

It is very hard to grasp this concept because every day we are reminded of the costs associated with everything from a gum ball which used to be a penny and now costs a quarter to a new car which is quoted on the radio but when you go in to purchase at that price, well they just sold the last one.  The adage “There is no such thing as a free lunch” permeates society so naturally the question is always “How much does it cost?”  If each of us realized what Jesus paid to free us, would the world be a different place?

Jesus says ‘Drink without cost” and these words at any bar would create a riot.  But do Christians realize what Jesus has provided?  His life giving drink that refreshes the soul for eternity is available for free but sadly few step up and order a round.

Today Lord, help me to spread the news that You are giving away a new life filled with blessings for FREE!  Open the eyes and the hearts of those You call to accept the gift that You so lovingly prepared.
