Sunday July 17, 2016 Pruning

Jesus said “My Father prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more.  You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you.  Remain in me and I will remain in you.  For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.”  John 15:2-4

I have often been regretful when friends moved away or a relationship seemed to drift apart.  I have learned through retrospection that God was pruning so I could turn my focus elsewhere.  In the midst of my life and commitments… it is very hard to have perspective.  I do and go and allocate my resources as best I can.  But, when something is cut away, I realize too late that too much time was spent there.  I don’t see that immediately because I am not always ready to let go BUT time is God’s best teacher.

God prunes to help me be more fruitful and abundant.  When I moved to FL from MN I was unhappy to leave my daughter, the friends that I had made and the company that I had built.  God has shown me so many new and different ways to bear fruit in the Sunshine State where everything grows.  Given a new lease on life carries with it certain responsibilities and I am grateful that God has allowed me to bloom where I have been planted.  Afraid and sad as I was… God knew that I would bear fruit because I remained in Him.

Dear Father, I pray to always remain a fruitful servant, connected to You through the gracious life giving vine of Your Son, Jesus.  I know I cannot produce anything worthwhile without the nutrients provided by Scripture and Sacrament.  Please continue to feed me through the daily bread of both!
